A unique, soulful, full-bodied yellow style rested for over a year to mellow the charcoal roast finish into the folds.
While Dasha's more delicate, high-end yellows necessitate higher pricing, her larger leaf harvests that she renders into a robust yellow called 黄大茶 huáng dà chá (literally "Yellow Big Tea") provides a more approachable taste of fully-handmade yellow tea of Huoshan.
While admittedly ugly and stemmy, Dasha's Big Yellow is irrepressibly soulful and chock full of unique character lent to it by the wet-yellowing of its larger leaves and intensive high-heat charcoal roasting yielding a dynamic, mouth-feel forward tea of medium oxidation and endless steeps. This one is pure fun: a working man's yellow to win over those that don't need a pinky up there to enjoy a good brew.
While other Huoshan producers make Huang Da Cha throughout the summer, Dasha begins Big Yellow production at the onset of 谷雨 Guyu / Grain Rain and wraps up by the end of May. This tea was harvested the first week of May from natural gardens up at 金鸡山 jīn jī shān "golden rooster mountain" (700 meters) the core production area in Huoshan, providing an ideal base material for this tea. Dasha recommends brewing this one as one prepares phoenix or rock oolong: water around boiling temp, quick steeps, going for many, many rounds.

Gus is interviewed and tells the story about finding Dasha and Huoshan while drinking this tea in the youtube video above.
So good! Distinct but not overly strong smoky flavor. Don’t sleep on this one.
Unique and delightful. The unsteeped leaves look a bit rough: lots of stems, but this only seems to add to the delicious body and aroma.
Spun sugar, caramel, pistachio, roast chestnut and Chinese medicine shop on the nose. Full, satisfying body and taste with a slight tangy bitterness at the base of the tongue reminiscent of a good medium roast oolong. There is that satisfying nutty sweetness you associate with a good Chinese green, but filled out with the sugary caramel nuttiness promised by the nose instead of by higher vegetal notes. Quite unlike anything else I've ever tasted (this was my first time trying a yellow).
I find that boiling water works best. The tea is very endurant; over a number of steeps the higher and more bitter notes fade away leaving behind the nutty caramel sweetness. I've also tried it grandpa style to great effect. 10/10 for flavor and value.
